Vintage Italian Venetian-Style Tooled Leather Tray

A striking example of traditional Italian decorative arts, this rectangular vanity or desk tray is crafted in the classic Venetian style. Produced in Italy during the mid-to-late 20th century (c. 1960s - 1970s), the piece features a contoured wood-fiber or papier-mâché core tightly wrapped in a smooth leather hide. The reverse side highlights a traditional hand-stitched border seam that permanently secures the leather casing over the frame.

The tray features a beautifully scalloped, raised pie-crust rim designed for secure handling. The interior border and center medallion are decorated with intricate, hand-stamped scrolling filigree, acanthus leaves, and Renaissance revival flourishes. This decorative tooling pays homage to the classical 16th-century leather bookbinding traditions of Florence and Venice.
