Antique 19th Century Wrought Iron Courting Candlestick

Bring exceptional historical character and primitive texture to your hearth display with this rare antique 19th-century wrought iron "courting" candlestick. This piece claims the name as the central stem features an openwork spiraled cage or "birdcage" twist configuration. In traditional lore, the height of the candle socket could be adjusted up or down the spiral tracks to ration the burning time—allowing a father to dictate exactly how long a suitor was permitted to sit with his daughter.

The perimeter of the heart base is wrapped in an authentic twisted wire border trim and elevated by three hand-hammered ball feet. The design incorporates an adjustable slide bobeche candle socket balanced by a wide, sweeping finger loop handle complete with a hand-punched oak leaf finial accent.
