Antique 1870 D.L. Smith's Patent "Magnetic Time Keeper" Pocket Sundial Compass
This rare American-made pantochronometer features a heavy, spun brass press-fit pocket casing that securely protects its original floating paper dial and integrated brass gnomon vane. Remarkably well-preserved, the original glass protective dome cover is entirely free of any scratches, cracks, or clouding, allowing the finely aged paper dial underneath to float and rotate completely freely on its focal pivot pin.
The highly collectible pop-off lid displays a dramatic, high-relief Art Nouveau style blazing sun face, while the underside base is beautifully embossed with a patriotic ring of 13 stars surrounding the official patent mark: "D.L. Smith's Patent Aug. 23, 1870".
