19th-century French Hand-Carved Wooden Butter Mold

Originating in traditional European folk art and rustic baking cultures, molds like this were essential fixtures of historic agrarian households.
To use it, fresh, hand-churned butter or thick pastry dough was firmly pressed into the hollow cavity. When inverted, the intricate negative carving left a beautiful, raised impression on the surface of the food. This specific piece features a highly romanticized intaglio folk motif—a stylized heart wrapped in delicate leaves and scrolling vines—which was traditionally used for celebratory wedding feasts, harvest festivals, or Sunday family gatherings.
